FIAKER 2.0: Redefining Coach Tours with Innovative Design

An Advanced Carriage Concept by Michael Hofbauer

For cities that rely on traditional coach tours, the issue of horse refuse has posed a significant challenge. Many cities struggle to find effective and environmentally friendly solutions to manage the waste produced during these tours. However, designer Michael Hofbauer has come up with a groundbreaking solution with his project, FIAKER 2.0. This innovative carriage design not only addresses the problem of street pollution but also aims to maintain the authentic and traditional experience of coach tours.

The FIAKER 2.0 project tackles two key aspects. Firstly, it offers a practical solution to the problem of horse refuse, which has long plagued cities that rely on coach tours. By implementing an innovative yet simple waste management system, this design effectively addresses the issue of street pollution. Secondly, Hofbauer has developed a unique design for a horse-drawn carriage that combines classical aesthetics with a modern and contemporary form. The challenge was to create a concept that is both ecologically friendly and visually appealing, while still capturing the essence of a traditional coach tour.

The FIAKER 2.0 carriage is the result of a meticulous design process. After conducting thorough research and analysis, the CAD model was developed using specialized software and rendered for visualization. A 1:6 scale model was then created by milling foam and 3D printing the wheels using selective laser sintering. The parts were painted and assembled to bring the design to life.

With dimensions of 6200mm in length, 2800mm in width, and a wheelbase of 4800mm, the FIAKER 2.0 carriage boasts a distinctive appearance. The front wheels have a diameter of 900mm, while the rear wheels measure 1200mm in diameter. These specifications contribute to the overall elegance and functionality of the design.

By incorporating the keywords "design," "concept," "carriage," "horse-drawn," "coach tour," "Fiaker," and "transportation," the FIAKER 2.0 project aligns perfectly with the themes of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology that define the lifestyle industry.

The FIAKER 2.0 project began in April 2012 and was presented in November of the same year. Since January 2014, it has been exhibited at Fahr(T)raum Mattsee in Austria, captivating audiences with its innovative approach to coach tours.

Michael Hofbauer's design is the result of extensive research, including literature reviews and expert interviews. The aim was to create a contemporary and ecological concept that still evokes the traditional charm of coach tours. By combining traditional values with modern innovation, the FIAKER 2.0 project offers a fresh and enticing experience for clients.

The FIAKER 2.0 project, with its visionary design and commitment to sustainability, has garnered recognition in the form of the Iron A' Design Award in 2014. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The FIAKER 2.0 carriage is celebrated for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

With FIAKER 2.0, Michael Hofbauer has revolutionized the world of coach tours, offering a solution to the problem of street pollution while preserving the authenticity of this traditional form of transportation. This innovative design sets a new standard for the industry, making coach tours more attractive and sustainable for both cities and clients alike.
